Why is humility seen as a weakness? Is it because society has taught us that having pride is associated with success or contentment? Humility has often been perceived as having a low self-esteem. However, humility does not mean that you are thinking less of yourself, it means that you are thinking about yourself less and more about others.

In today’s society, many people have adapted to focus on their own desires and ambitions, and many times, pride gets in the way.  When pride is present, it is easier to think of yourself better than others, and this can lead to becoming more judgmental. This has become so common, that the world does not see how big of a problem it is. People judge the clothes others wear, the jobs they have, their opinions, their likes and dislikes, how they look, etc. This is the complete opposite of what God wants Christians to be like when it comes to being humble people.  Rather than thinking of ways they can serve or reach out to a person, they are thinking of ways they can bring them down.

The Bible teaches us to always think of others before ourselves. “Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor” (1 Corinthians 10: 24). As Christians, we must learn to love each other, feel each other’s pain and sufferings, keep each other in prayer, and think of ways to serve each other. We can understand that having humility is something within ourselves that freely shows compassion and kindness for others you we grow in God’s wisdom and grace.  “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Jesus was a great example of what it is to have a servant’s heart and be humble.

Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. (John 13:3-5)

This lesson to the disciples is what taught them to be humble in their walk with God. If humility is something that Jesus practiced, why is it seen as a weakness?
